Is Positive Thinking Necessary For A Happy Life?
73
Having a positive attitude in these times is very challenging. All over the world people are living in fear of losing their homes, their jobs and their finances. Positive thinking is made even more difficult by the constant flow of negative information that comes at us via the media. Not a minute goes by when we are not being told how bad things are, how there is no relief in sight and what we are going to have to sacrifice in order to survive. It is no wonder that many people are living without any hope for their future and many more are in a constant state of fear.
But is the situation really that bad, and if it is what can we do about it? The truth is there is not a lot we can do about the global financial situation, what the various world leaders are doing about it and how the media reports it. However what we can control is how we react to it. We do have complete and total control over our own environments and our own minds, so it is up to us to take responsibility for what we allow in and how we deal with it.
Let me ask you a question, if you had a garbage can in your kitchen and you just kept putting garbage into it, never emptied it and never made an effort to slow down how much garbage was going into it, what would happen to the garbage can? Obviously it would overflow, but what else would happen? If you did not make an effort to slow down the amount of garbage going into the can, the garbage would become more and more, and it would begin to smell. The stench would eventually filter throughout the entire house; also the garbage would spread from the kitchen and take over all the other rooms as well. Most likely the smell and the bacteria would begin to affect your health after a while, and you and your family would end up becoming sick, simply because you did not monitor your garbage.
Reading this scenario you probably chuckled to yourself because it sounded far-fetched and you probably thought, no one would leave his or her garbage without emptying it for so long that it filled up their house and began making everyone living there sick. But I beg to differ!
Are you experiencing fears in your life? Are you worried about the economy? Are most of your conversations negative? Do you have financial worries? Are your relationships strained?
If you answered yes to these questions it is partly because you have not emptied your own garbage cans!
Do you watch the news every day? Do you read newspapers everyday? Do you read news bulletins online? Do you listen to highlights on the radio? Is the news that your receive all positive? I think not!
Day in and day out you are feeding your mind with toxic information from the media, you never get rid of that toxicity, you leave it to grow and grow and it seeps into the very fiber of your being. In other words you are constantly filling your mind (the garbage can) with negative information (garbage) and eventually it fills up and overflows. This overflow is causing the fear, the anxiety and the despair that you are experiencing in your life. A mind full of negative thoughts (garbage) can only produce negative effects, i.e. negative experiences in your life.
Therefore if you want to change how you feel and if you want to change your situation, then you must begin monitoring the amount of garbage you put in the can daily and be sure to empty the can several times throughout the day.
So how can you monitor the amount of negativity you subject yourself to? Start by avoiding the news. Yes it is possible to take in a certain about without being overloaded by it. Just take a look at how much news you listen to or watch per day, then make a conscious decision to half that amount. If you catch the news four times a day, cut it down to two and then cut it down to one. But this must be a conscious decision on your part, it will not happen unless you take responsibility for what you allow into your mind and take the necessary action.
Next replace that negative information with positive thoughts, actions and information. Read uplifting material, listen to inspiring music and engage in positive productive conversations.
